Our planning document, to be completed by early November, will provide a blueprint, the basis for our future external grant and funding requests. How should we envision the future of this site? The September 25 public meeting in the CTMS auditorium (7:30-9:00 pm) is to gather input from teachers, administrators, historic preservationists, and the public at large. Ways of life forms a bridge between these two disparate topics given the importance of water resources for human activity and the impact of that activity on water resources. What unifies them is a focus on the human impact on the landscape, how the stream was used on the Vought farmstead and how the aquifer and water recharge is affected by suburban development today. The Vought house and the environmental buffer zone have been recognized as educational resources but they are very different. Students may also GPS locate the samples as part of a larger project where students will use the data and skills to design an environmentally sustainable home. This year CTMS science teachers plan to have students take soil and water samples for testing from the environmental buffer zone and the C-1 stream.

The C-1 classified stream and environmental buffer zone, between the Vought House and CTMS, also offer opportunities for hands-on education in the sciences, for middle school students and others. So far, this has been the sole focus of our educational partnership with the Clinton Township Middle School (CTMS). This Revolutionary War site is and will continue to be a rich primary resource for 7th grade social studies and language arts. We envision a vibrant educational center where students and adults learn about the Vought family, the ways of 18th Century farm life, the architecture and culture reflected in this house, and the events which led to its confiscation and sale by the patriots. We see the Vought House as more than a rarely-open old house museum. On March 2012 our non-profit acquired the Vought house property (from Grayrock Road to the stream, from the school driveway to Route 31).
